The structure of call data in the 3CX database is pretty complicated. The data structure of the CDR files is fairly simple and may be easier to use if they contain the information you need.
3CX doesn't support accessing the PostgreSQL database directly. Unfortunately, if you want to build custom reports, there are only two sources of data (1) the optional CDR files 3CX can create, or (2) direct access to the PostgreSQL database.
If you can get what you need from the CDR files, that is the recommended approach. But if you need more information than is available in the CDR files, the only choice is to get the data from PostgreSQL. You cannot get the data via any of the 3CX APIs.
Exporter has been in use around the world for more than 7 years, without any known issues. While 3CX won't endorse any product that accesses the PostgreSQL database, they know about Exporter and it hasn't been a issue.
